The crest (peak) of the sine wave corresponds to the point of maximum pressure, or condensation, in the sound wave. This is where the molecules in the medium (e.g., air) are closest together. Conversely, the trough (valley) of the sine wave represents rarefaction, or the point of minimum pressure in the sound wave, where the molecules are farthest apart.
