The formula used to calculate the loudness L (in decibels) of a sound with intensity I is: L = 10 log10(I/I0) where I0 is a reference intensity, often the quietest sound that the average human ear can hear. Because the decibel scale is logarithmic, an increase in power doesn't result in a proportional increase in perceived loudness. For example, if you double the power of a sound, the increase in loudness is approximately 3 dB, not double the loudness. Now, if you triple the power output, the increase in loudness can be calculated by taking 10 times the base-10 logarithm of the ratio of the new intensity to the old intensity: ΔL = 10 log10(3) ≈ 4.77 dB |
