This phenomenon occurs due to thermal expansion. When a material such as steel is heated, its atoms and molecules gain energy and vibrate more rapidly. This increased thermal energy causes the atomic bonds to loosen, allowing the material to expand. Different materials have different coefficients of thermal expansion, which quantify how much they expand or contract with temperature changes. In the case of steel, it expands when heated. The expansion is uniform in all directions, including the inside diameter of a hole. As the temperature increases, the steel plate and the material surrounding the hole expand. Since the hole is surrounded by expanding material, it also experiences an increase in size. Therefore, as the temperature of the steel plate increases in the furnace, the inside diameter of the hole will generally become larger due to the thermal expansion of the steel material.
